The Department of Learning is so proud of all that our D181 students have accomplished this year to meet state standards, progress in the core content, and develop socially and emotionally.
We encourage you to work with your child over the summer with just the right mix of fun in the sun, family time, new experiences, spending time with friends, and studying to reinforce the skills learned this year. We ask that you continue to foster a belief in the importance and enjoyment of mathematics and reading at home.
The D181 Teacher Librarians and Reading Specialists have developed “Summer Reading” lists by grade level for kindergarten-eighth grade with their recommendations for books, authors, series, and links to sites to assist you in your selection of reading materials. The grade level lists are meant as a guide, so children can pick and choose some books that the D181 staff recommended and are free to select books of their choice as well. The link to summer reading for grades K-5 can be found here. The middle school summer reading lists can be found here.
Like summer reading, ongoing math practice increases a student's ability to retain concepts, enhances their performance, and prepares them for the next grade level. Summer math and reading packets are available to all students exiting their current course. All D181 summer math and reading review packets are optional but highly recommended. They are a comprehensive review of the concepts the child learned during the 2023-2024 school year. If your child completes the review packet, they can work on another grade level. Our teachers recommend that students spread the packet work out throughout the summer, instead of completing it all right at the beginning of the summer or all at the end.
The math and reading packets are protected under copyright law and we have purchased the rights for our students. Due to this, the packets will not be posted on public domains. The packets are linked to this letter and will be available in your child's Skyward account all summer. If you need further assistance locating the summer packet for your child, you may contact your building principal or the Department of Learning.
Thank you and have a fantastic summer.
