Dear 181 Families and Community,

We're reaching out today to share information regarding the potential reopening of Sterigenics, a commercial sterilizer located at 7775 Quincy Street in Willowbrook. Sterigenics has been closed since it was barred in February 2019 from using ethylene oxide, a chemical which can increase cancer risks and cause other major medical problems to those who are chronically exposed, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

While our schools are outside the immediate boundaries of Sterigenics, we recognize this is an extremely important and critical ongoing issue that affects our community at large.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, a Consent Order was filed that would provide Sterigenicsthe ability to reopen pending confirmation of meeting new operational requirements outlined in the consent order.

A formal public meeting to accept oral comments on the planned issuance of a construction permit to place significant new controls on emissions will be hosted by the Illinois EPA from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, at Ashton Place, 341 75th St., Willowbrook.

The Illinois EPA is also accepting written comments on the draft permit through August 15, 2019. Written comments can be submitted by email to EPA.Sterigenics@illinois.gov.

The District will continue to keep in contact with our local government agencies, who are working directly with representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Illinois EPA, and the Illinois Department of Public Health. The Village of Willowbrook has more information on Sterigenics and ongoing issues posted on their website, here. The Village of Hinsdale has information posted on its website here.

As we hear of them, we will keep you informed of the latest updates regarding this issue.
