Response to Intervention

Community Consolidated School District 181, as required by state regulation, is in the process of further developing a "Response to Intervention" (RTI) system that provides additional support to students who may require unique strategies or programming to meet their learning needs.

Currently, supports for Reading have been designed and are implemented. The RTI prgram is now being expanded, through inter-departmental collaboration (i.e. Teaching and Instruction, and Pupil Personnel Services departments), to address student needs relative to: Mathematics, Written Expression, Behavior. Although processes for these newer areas are in development, district school staff may address, with as needed from the Central Administrative Team, concerns for individual students as they arise.

What is RTI?

Response to intervention integrate assessment and intervention within a multi-level prevention system to maximize students achievement and to reduce behavior problems. With RTI, schools identify students who are discrepant in their performance in relation to: own capabilities, peers' performance, state and nation norms. Once a students is identified as needing addition support, school staff subsequently:

    • Monitor student progress more frequently
    • Provide evidence-based interventions
    • Adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student's responsiveness

Such a process provides support to students before they become known as a "struggling learning" with poor grades. If a student, over time, does not respond to intervention, they may be considered for special education services with parental permission.
